State permission for religious conversion

The government of Myanmar is proposing legislation that would require anyone wanting to change their religion to seek state permission first.

The bill is backed by nationalist Buddhist groups and follows outbreaks of anti-Muslim violence that has killed hundreds and driven tens of thousands from their homes.

The ministry of religion is proposing the establishment of local committees that would adjudicate on any cases of religious conversion. It is calling for public debate before presenting the bill to parliament.

Buddhist nationalists have been campaigning for tougher restrictions on the country’s Muslim minority following outbreaks of communal violence.
